This work is part of a series of black-and-white photo collages entitled the Buttoned Down Series. Architecture in the first two images was photographed in the Northwest, the third and fourth images were from the San Francisco phase of the series. Other images are from Chicago, Austria, and Germany. At the time this series started, issues of cultural restraint in general, and feminism in particular were in the front of my mind. As women’s roles in the greater culture outside of the home grew during the 1990s and into the 21st Century, the images of women’s clothing inside the buildings expanded also. The size of the clothing expanded so much that it appeared to be too large for the space that it occupied inside the buildings. The clothing was photographed from the University of Washington and the Seattle Repertory Theater wardrobes. The work in this series has been described by art historians and critics as surreal (fantastic imagery), isolated, and iconic. |
